So Alpine thought they had it all planned despite Oscar Piastri arriving a bit early from F2 after completing that level last year so promoted to reserve driver this year. Three drivers (Ocon, Alonso and Piastri) for two seats in 2023. No problem as Alonso would sign a new 2 year deal he was negotiating with them for 2023 drive and then they thought he would be happy moving to WEC for 2024. Piastri was lined up for a 2023 seat at Williams for a development year (Russell-like) and then come back to Alpine for 2024.

And then Alonso goes to Aston Martin. Fernando of course still managed by Flavio Briatore who does like putting a spanner into the Alpine/Renault works. No problem, opens up the space Oscar straight away. Except his manager, Mark Webber, thinks the 31st July was a key date in the contract, and that possibly Alpine didn’t exercise an option in time or tick the right boxes, leaving Piastri free to walk. And it seems McLaren are interested and why wouldn't they be in a rising start like Oscar? Alpine of course disagree and think Oscar is still obliged to drive for them in 2023.

Where that leaves Danny Ric at McLaren who is under contract for 2023 is anyone's guess. A return to Alpine seems the obvious move but would either party want it?

Pure F1 Piranha Club shenanigans :)

The McLaren has probably been as disappointing this year as Danny Ric has himself not even a top six car on pace alone….he doesn’t appear to have any decent options if he’s manoeuvred out of McLaren.

Lando is still best of the rest behind the top three teams. It's competitive with Alpine, Alfa and Haas this year. Danny Ric has had a few flashes of old form in the McLaren but I think Lando is a bit underrated. It would be a shame to see Danny go but good options are not really open for him.

All too easy for Max Verstappen in the Belgian GP at Spa yesterday despite an engine change penalty that saw him start from 15th place on the grid….Probably the most exciting action was Charles Leclerc’s ill fated attempt at the fastest lap.

I don't understand the finer points of F1 at all, but why don't they just sit Verstappen in the safety car for every race and just award him the championship at the start of the season?

It would save the other teams millions!

Wouldn't blame Lewis for walking away from Mercedes this afternoon

Because he’s only won it once? If they’d done it when Hamilton and Mercedes were winning year on year Verstappen would still be crashing into everyone trying stupid overtakes.

Listening to Toto Wolff after the race it’s easy to understand what Mercedes were trying to do… the VSC spoilt what could have been a very exciting end to the race.

So according to Crofty we have a top 3 for the Italian GP of

Leclerc
Russell
Norris

I believe Verstappen will start in 7th

Carlos and Lewis back in 18th and 19th after grid penalties.

Verstappen provisionally will start from 4th (don't ask 🙂).
