I was going to add Don Goodman but what is a scapegoat 11. Is it players who some thought were crap but were in reality good servants to the club, or those who were genuinely crap.

Good question.

Scapegoat
noun
a person who is blamed for the wrongdoings, mistakes, or faults of others, especially for reasons of expediency.

I think to qualify for the first XI ideally the scapegoat should have been blamed more than was fair.

DG contributed nothing while with us.

I can't remember him being called out specifically at the time though? Granted I have tried to erase that season from my memory.

David Noble was regularly criticised for passing sideways and backwards despite being technically very gifted.

I was just about to add his name. The season we were relegated he got so much unwarranted stick.

I think scapegoat is a term that is often thrown about but not always correctly. In fact pretty much everyone on that list I would say wasn't a scapegoat and Tully was probably the opposite if there's such a thing- he was a local lad that everybody loved (a role Sweeney is doing his best to take on).

I would say that Aimson fits the bill- he was part of a losing team and getting probably more than his fair share of the blame.

Paul Buckle was often unfairly singled out as a liability. In effect I thought he was a solid defensive midfielder, he signed for us on three occasions IIRC.

How about Steve Williams? Used to get all kinds of stick when hitting a pass none of our forwards had anticipated as he was about 5 seconds quicker in seeing it than they were!
