UK and European Politics 2024 Thread

After an election in Germany, it often takes several months for a coalition government to be formed. It seems to work fine to me. You may refer to these negotiations as wheeling and dealing, others will call it a willingness to compromise and find middle ground.

Question for those who do or have lived outside of the UK

I’m off to Madrid today so will get to see all that in action. In Germany, if you cross when the man is red, it’ll prompt a lot of tutting and head-shaking from other pedestrians, even if there’s not a car in sight.

UK and European Politics 2024 Thread

In the recent European Parliament elections, the AfD, a party further to the right than Reform, came second in this age group in Germany. Interestingly, the conservative CDU also performed well among young voters. Since Merkel stepped down and the CDU went into opposition after the 2021...

UK and European Politics 2024 Thread

Fair enough! FWIW, my views have changed on this matter over the years. I used to think the 15-year rule was a fair compromise, but I'm now glad that it has been removed (kudos to Harry Shindler).

UK and European Politics 2024 Thread

I don't think it was a constituency per se, but was given a distinct status in the referendum, allowing its residents to participate (special voting area or something along those lines). When the UK was in the EU, Gibraltar was part of the South West England region for European Parliament...

UK and European Politics 2024 Thread

No offence taken - it's a good debate. I see where you're coming from about 'actual constituents'. However, I believe my point still stands. While it's true that I no longer live in the constituency where I'm registered to vote (the place where I was born and spent the first 20 years of my...

UK and European Politics 2024 Thread

I'd have to look it up, but I don't think any EU member states allow non-citizens to vote in national elections, only locals and European (at least that's the case in Germany).

UK and European Politics 2024 Thread

As a British citizen living in Germany for the past 14 years, I believe it's fair for expats to vote in UK elections. The policies of the UK government still affect us in many ways, from legal obligations to pensions and foreign policy, so it would be undemocratic if we didn't have a say. Even...

    Dry January

So, January is drawing to a close – how did those taking part get on? It hasn't been the best start to the year for me, both professionally and personally, but completing Dry January (in a few hours anyway) was one positive to take away from this month. After a tricky first week, it was plain...

    NFL 2022

Well, it was a similar story for the Bills not showing up in the play offs. As AM says, we were lucky against an understrength Miami last week, giving up a 17-point lead in turnovers, before barely scraping over the line. I didn't have a good feeling before yesterday's game despite home field...

I have an Instant Pot. There are nine different functions, but I tend to stick to the slow cook and sauté options. It was around 60 quid and certainly gets a lot of use. It makes top notch rice.

    The Beer Lovers' Thread.

The selection of non-alcoholic beers has certainly improved in the past few years. In Germany, there are a number of 0% wheat beers that taste like the real thing. I haven't seen 0% Guinness here yet though.
