As at most grounds in those days no segregation.
At the old Den at Millwall there were not even separate turnstiles for different parts of the ground. You had to run the gauntlet of the skinheads and never wore rosettes, scarves or badges there. I was OK as I had a local accent and didn't go wild at Palace goals but I pitied fans from northern clubs, their accents marked them out.

I mentioned this game on the best ever performance thread.
Once they'd gone 4-3 up you thought 'Oh well, at least we had a go.'
Then we got the fourth .....

A great day out.
Can't believe it's 8 years ago.

An excellent day out. Sheffield is a good city to go to for football, the Devonshire Arms being a good hostelry for Exeter fans.

Still don't know whether we were unlucky not to win, or lucky we didn't lose.

You would of taken a point before kick off though.

I guess confidence was high after winning away at Walsall during the week. At 2-0 up I wanted that second win!

And nearly went 3-0 up not long after. 4-4 was a fair result though, I think if we were 4-3 up and then they equalised we would have gone home feeling gutted!

Yep..One of the few bright spots in a very poor season.

On the train back from Sheffield we heard that Jimmy Savile had died..He was still a ‘national treasure’ at the time, little did anyone know the storm that was brewing.

On this day 42 years ago.
Lost 0-4 at Swindon.
My memorable 1st away game outside of Devon. The first of many disappointments on the road.
Great excitement as a 16 year old getting onto one of the five coaches that left the bus station.
You had to be on yer toes in Swindon, the coaches did not drop off or pick up at the ground in those days so avoiding a booting was all part of the excitement.

Mad day looking back, that seemed normal at the time.

Dad drove us up for that one Mum even came as well that day...we only arrived a two or three minutes before kickoff and ended up going in the home end 😬 as it was closer to where we’d parked...think it was my second away game outside of Devon as I had the honour of witnessing the 6:2 thrashing at Cardiff in the FA Cup two or three years before that.

I went to the New Den once when I was working near London, just to add the ground to my list. Didn't speak in case anybody thought I came from Bristol. The locals would have been in a fairly mellow mood, as they won 4-1 against Brizzol City. Relaxed a bit when I reached the local station afterwards. The Force weren't taking any chances - more mounted police than you would find in Canada!
