Not quite true. Look at Ched Evans and the backlash from the fanbase of the clubs that were interested in him faced after serving his sentence. It wasn't until his conviction was quashed that anyone offered him a deal again.

Pretty much. That said, I suspect Man U will release Mason Greenwood because of the potential commercial fallout. At the same time, there's little doubt he will be offered something by a club with fewer corporate sponsors to keep happy.
