It's often mentioned that Premier League players are much fitter, when I hear this I want to know why? In the lower leagues we have to accept players have their limitations, whether that be skill, consistency or pace, we just have to accept that that's who they are, trying can improve this things to a limited degree but essentially they will always have those limitations. But fitness is just about working harder, there's no reason I can think of to accept lower fitness levels in the lower leagues, so I don't have much truck with the idea that the team are struggling because GC is working them too hard.

Sports science and access to the metrics this generates, is probably the answer.

I don't think fitness is just about working harder. There are physical elements that all athletes and sportsmen and women have or don't have that are relevant to fitness, these are underlying physical features of individuals that cannot necessarily be changed.

For example at Liverpool I know that they do a preseason test where they run players a defined distance (400m I think) then they take a blood test for lactic acid and then they run the 400m again and test again until the players reach a certain level. The point at which different players have to stop varies enormously. Milner apparently is top every year even at his current age.
