11th April 1970.

FA Cup Final. The first final that I was interested in &
watched on TV..There was huge interest at my school with everyone talking about it, you were in the Chelsea or Leeds camp 😁

The Horse of the Year Show a few days before was the reason for the disgrace of a pitch. Wembley in those days was not owned by the FA.

A earlier than usual Final for a number of reasons.

First match I ever saw in colour. In The Puffing Billy.

Yeah, Shilton really should have done better with their goal.

The state of the Wembley pitch was indeed shocking, they certainly could have done with someone like Chas ! :p

I remember the nation being in a state of shock the next morning that England were not going to the World Cup the next year in West Germany.
After being beaten over 2 legs in the European Nations Cup Q/F (Euros now) the previous year by West Germany inc a 1-3 defeat at Wembley,Sir Alf’s time was coming to a end.

I still wish Sir Bob had put Dave Beasant on for the penalties in '90.

A popular view, but in fact a myth (still around 3 decades on!). Beasant was not on the bench, and could not be used.

Details here:

Looking at the bench for that game, Steve Bull who had played the majority of his career up to that point in the 3rd & 4th Divisions(86-89)
His club Wolves were in the 2nd Division 1989/90.

The ‘Tipton Skinhead’ only ever played one game in the top flight, as a sub for West Brom in a 1st Division fixture in 1986, before he was released & signed for Wolverhampton Wanderers.
