Predictable. If its on form though, how are Maddison and Gallagher getting picked?
Maddison's goals and assists have been very impressive this season despite playing for a poor side.

Can't say i've seen much of Gallagher but presume he's impressed GS, possibly just from previous camps alone.

RE Watkins, if we are looking for number 9s, sadly he isn't ahead of Kane or Wilson. We also have Rashford who can play wide or through the middle.

and kalvin phillips, he's barely played all season. glad eze's in though, looks very good
Not sure if this has much bearing but City's season is two weeks longer than Villa's. Unlikely that Phillips will be playing in the FA Cup or CL finals but at least he has to train and prepare.
Ollie can prepare for the beach..

Agreed shame for Ollie the timing was not right had the squad been announced a few weeks ago he would have been odds on to have been in it.

Phillips and Maguire,eh,Sterling wasn’t picked because he wasn’t in form, phillips and Maguire have hardly played ,and when Phillips came on as sub for Man City last night the first thing he did was foul a Brighton player, and as for Maguire what a stunning performance against valencia

Not that I want to justify all of Southgate's decisions, but the 'third striker' decision is easy to understand. There's Kane and Rashford who are as close to guaranteed as can be ,if fit.

Then behind them there is a whole host of others - Wilson,Toney, Calvert-Lewin, Ollie Watkins, Abraham, Bamford - all of whom have been tried but none of whom are obviously miles better than the others. So that spot tends to go to whichever of them is in the best recent form.

As for the midfield selections though...
