It was always a good watch, Not the same after Norman left but Ross did an OK job, You were lucky, Our nearest cinema in Bude, Which was ok until it was torn down to make way for a Sainsbury's, We had the Rainbow at Poundstock not far from Bude IIRC it wasn't open all the time, It was a small, virtually barn type place just by the A39. Films on VHS was a god send for us (We did have to wait for the video release) when they became popular, At least we had a video shop in Holsworthy.
Yes, Jonathon Ross was good, I initially thought no one could follow Barry Norman, Ross was very knowledgable on the subject matter, plus has a genuine interest in World Cinema.

Channel 4 showing American Football, the first UK broadcaster to show the sport in-depth. It had been shown since the inception of the new channel in November 1982.
The Super Bowl XVII had been shown live earlier in the year, another first for a UK broadcaster.
The programme really kickstarted interest in the sport in this country, which until then had been generally confined to areas around USAFB.

Knots Landing in the afternoon. The initial series when it was broadcast in the UK in BBC1 had a prime time evening slot.
It was one of the longest running prime time dramas on US TV. Debuting on CBS in late 1979, running for 14 seasons(344 episodes) until 1993.
A spin off from Dallas. Following JRs black sheep brother of the Ewing family, Gary who moved to the fictional Southern California suburb of Knots Landing with his wife Valene. It was well produced, touching subjects in real life rather than the fantasy business world surrounded Dallas.

Later a film treat with imo Sergio Leones best ‘Spaghetti Western’ The Good,Bad & the Ugly(1966)

On Channel 4 International Film Season.
In the early days of C4 there was many slots for International films that were not catered for on the other 3 channels..Film International a similar vehicle for World Cinema which was on BBC2 had finished in the late 1970s.
The Boat is Full(1981) a Swiss/German language film set in the WW2 when the Swiss banned immigrants seeking asylum from Nazi Germany & Vichy France. ‘The Boat is Full’ was the term the Swiss used for not accepting refugees.
The story is around 6 train passengers((Jews & a deserter)who get off a train in a remote part of Switzerland, trying not to arouse suspicion & a return to the Third Reich.

Cissy & Ada from this date in 1979 on BBC1.
Roy Baraclough & Les Dawson had great timing. The former had trouble keeping a straight face with Les’s part of the script at times.
The Dawson mime part was a observation he made from female Mill workers in the north who frequently mimed because of the noise in the Mill.

6th December 1975.

A good solid nights entertainment on BBC1. Starting with Dr Who in its regular early evening Saturday slot.
A great disaster film on at 7pm The Last Voyage(1960) It is up there with the best in that genre. A decommissioned liner( ile de France) was partially sunk for the film.
Hopefully TPTV will get their hands on it. I’ve not seen it for 30 years.
