Yes, if the message wasn't received after the Euro elections, I think it will be now.

Clacton was somewhat of a formality. Heywood however was seismic. 600 or so votes away from Milliband having to resign perhaps. UKIP shouldn't have been chipping into staunch Labour support, but it did.

The cat is well and truly amongst the pigeons. Last night cannot be dismissed as mid term protests. UKIP cannot now be denied a seat in any TV Leadership debates next year. That could also bring the Greens to the table. Traditional UK two party politics is long since gone.

I agree aboslutely. And in my opinion it can only be a good thing to have more than just the main 2 parties slogging it out with their self serving agendas.

Does that mean we may face Italian style unstable coalition governments that last for about a year ?

We'd be there already if the LibDems weren't so spineless.

Harsh on Clogg and his merry men Stroudy ? They went into coalition for the sake of the country, not the glory of office. Or so they say.

Both Cameron and Milliband are saying exactly what people are peed off about, Just slagging the result without really acknowledging how close they are to becoming yesterdays men. Cameron has said "A vote for UKIP results in a Labour Government", Just what he's told his cronies to say at every interview today and Milliband saying it hit the Tories heartland, Both are total idiots and they deserve all they get!!

You're right in that the big news story of the night was Heywood and Middleton - Clacton was a foregone conclusion, even the staunchest of Conservatives had written it off whereas Labour have continued to play down UKIP. The Conservatives however have a massive fight on their hands in the coming weeks in Rochester and Strood.

Instead of saying what is wrong with UKIP - and there is of course plenty - the "major" parties should be considering why people are turning to UKIP in droves and trying to engage with them as to what can be done to persuade them to "come back" to the red/blue/yellow folds. Is it borne out of anti-EU feeling? Partly, but I think it's more that UKIP have become the protest vote du jour since the Lib Dems have been in government whereas in the past these are by-elections the Lib Dems would be coming out of left field to win.

Will UKIP gain (more) seats in the election? It's so difficult to say - there's usually something of an election unwind as voters sharpen their focus in terms of who they actually want running the country rather than "none of the above", but it's clear that UKIP are no longer a minor nuisance to be swatted away dismissively.

Why people are voting UKIP, Easy, The Westminster establishment have totally become aloof from the rest of the Country, Things like immigration are a concern but not only the people coming in, The infrastructure to support new people are not in place, School class sizes are getting bigger, The NHS are struggling, Not only due to an ageing population, but people registering from overseas, Housing, affordable or Social is totally non-exsistant and those in the "Westminster Bubble" have become so out of touch with normal people the people are ****ed off! So all Cameron and Milliband can do after these two by-elections are to slag off each other and not do anything about peoples concerns

But they (Ukip) lost 2 council seats last night, 1 to Labour (Crawley) and 1 to Cons (Brightlingsea).
