Out of interest, who would have been England's penalty taker in '66? I guessing Bobby Charlton. Hurst, Ball and Peters would be candidates but all quite new to the team at that point.

Goalkeepers make a difference in shoot outs. Lloris never looked like saving one. Martinez got into some heads and if he goes the right way, it has to be in the corner or high into the net. He probably should have saved Mbappe's.

I wonder what would have happened if it was still level after Extra Time in ‘66 ? It was a few years before penalty kicks were used to determine the result of a game.

Gamesmanship from Martinez yes, but Mbappe aside the French penalty takers completely lacked confidence and belief in what they were doing…absolutely superb World Cup Final nonetheless packed with excitement and drama.
