Well yeah, who could not feel the slightest sense of schadenfreude when they ballsed up against the mighty North Macedonia.

But then the flip side is that you then get pubs teams like Wales in their place, who England go and batter for us to wake up to cries of 'it's coming home, it's coming home....etc.'. I guess you can't win.
Life's a person innit.

Wales certainly not the worst team ever (who can forget Zaire in 1974?), but possibly the worst European team ever. Feel a bit sorry for Italy watching it all from the sidelines.
Probably Greece 1994. Lost to Argentina, Nigeria and Bulgaria. Scored 0, conceded 10.

And so Southgate goes and shows he has even less nous than I give him credit for. Having said that, Wales were so awful by all accounts (some people are saying they're possibly the worst European team ever to make it to the finals...I'm struggling to think of worse, how about you?)...that it would've been extremely difficult to throw anything away.

Now he's going to face the small matter of France in the quarters, a team that I fancy as clear favourites to win the whole thing. That's if England even get past Senegal who won't be a pushover, Mane or no Mane. You don't really want to be facing a physical African team in the heat.

So let's see, England have beaten two pub teams but struggled when playing a bang average side in the USA. Of course, were England to actually beat France, then I'll have to eat my words and give credit where it's due. They then could and should be winning the tourney, but they'd still have a couple of games left to completely balls it up.
I don't understand why you clearly want England to fail? I know a couple of people with a similar attitude towards England. When we win it's because the opposition are rubbish, when we lose it's 'I told you, we're rubbish'.

Just enjoy the ride, I don't think we will win the tournament but I'm going to enjoy watching us try. We beat Wales last night, yes, they were poor but we can only beat what's in front of us.

As for the 'It's coming home', everyone knows it's just a bit of fun and only pointing a bit of fun at ourselves for our lack of success.

Ok, so tell me when was the last time you thought England was worth its hype? For me I think it was for a few days in and around June 1996. Although when I come to think of it, even that was just one game. Other than that, I'm struggling. I honestly can't remember a convincing win over a top side in a tournament. There was Germany last year (in the Euro qtrs), but that wasn't exactly that convincing and besides the Hun have fallen pretty far.

Maybe I, like some of your friends, have just become very used to England either mentally or tactically capitulating (or both) against the first semi decent side they come up against.

1986, 1990, 1998, 2002, 2006, 2010, 2014, 2018.

Will 2022 really be any different?

1st September 2001, Germany 1-5 England, WC Qualifier in Munich, with Michael Owen scoring a hat-trick ! Sadly overshadowed ten days later by the "Twin Towers" !

As has been said: when we win it's because the opposition are rubbish, when we lose, it's because we're rubbish which we knew already.

I don't believe I've ever said England are rubbish (this side of 2014). Wales are, but England aren't quite at those depths. They are a little better than bang average (as was most recently witnessed v the USA). Which is sad as they certainly aren't suffering a dearth of talent. The current root of their problem is an overly cautious and tactically inept coach. Let's see if I'm proved wrong this time. Not too much longer to wait - 11 days in fact.

What I don't understand is, you're an Exeter City fan (I presume), therefore why do you go after England for a lack of success whilst supporting a club like ours? I'd understand your mentality if you were a Man City or Liverpool fan...

At the end of the day I am a realist.

Exeter City doesn't have the luxury of being able to pick the best players the country has to offer.
