Just a point to consider...the free agents are players that other clubs have decided to overlook, otherwise they would be signed and not free agents.
Surely, by not getting their contract renewed means a club will be overlooked.

Hardly the revelation of the decade Malcolm :)

I think the point Malcolm is trying to make, is that it can be safely assumed a 'free agent' is crap! Although I could of course be wrong.

Players become free agents for lots of reasons. Does not mean in anyway that they're not good enough.

Pete, you are wrong. You are always wrong. Sadly, we have to live with this.

Dunne, Duffy, Noble, Harley, Bauza, The pigeon are all signing that were free agents. I'm sure there are more but these are just off the top of my head.

Higher up the leagues Woodgate, Hahneman, Reo Coker, Carew, Seb Larsson, McFadden, Kev Phillips, Iain Turner, Gera, Danny Gabbidon, Matty Upson were all released by their clubs.

I believe with the majority of clubs using more austere measures these days there are more free agents than ever before. The money isn't there for most clubs to pick up all of the players

The transfer window is primarily for Premier League clubs who have to submit a 25 man squad and for wannabees in the Championship. So lots of players are just seemingly swopped around (unless you're Newcastle) to get a balanced 25.

Most of the players leaving for a fee from our Division have gone up a league, otherwise I can't see how it would bother a club who has only paid one transfer fee in the last six seasons. There are loads of redundant players from the Prem & the Champ who haven't contemplated lowering themselves to playing in League 1. With the loan window opening again, reality will begin to dawn on those players who consider themselves better than they actually are and they will begin to drop their wage demands.

I think, almost without exception, these were players who were available during the close season when players were considering options..we are now into the season and by definition. the free agents who are available now are players who were overlooked by other clubs..As I said in my last post, it doesn't mean there isn't a good player out there but it does mean we are dealing with a different situation.

This appears to be very true. Take a look at Leeds with their attendances and income and still they are selling some of their best players and buying very few. Times are hard for clubs as big as Leeds, so what chance have City got. We have no choice but to stay within budget, Plymouth will tell you that is the name of the game now!

No, it doesn't, my rider was that there may well be a decent signing out there but do we have the network to identify him without the player or agent coming to us? I'm not so sure...cue Jason....

I'd generally agree with that. However, there is hardly a dearth of free agents about and I am sure there are a number of diamonds in the rough, so to speak.

You're right though, we need the right contacts to get the right players, at the right wage.
