I remember a story (I think it’s true) when in the early days of The Golden Shot the final contestant was instructing the person controlling the bolt gun wildly from one side of the target to the other.
When the compère checked with him that he actually knew that he had to hit the cord in the middle to win the money he said that he was struggling because he couldn’t see his TV from the telephone box!

I read Bob Monkhouse's autobiography a few weeks ago and that story is in there
