Digging into the detail of the players involved for us, there are:

- new registrations for five youth players: James, Edgecombe, Beardmore, Billington, King
- updated contracts for two players: G Woods, Sweeney
- new registrations for five 1st team players: Harper, Aitchison, Carroll, Fitzwater, Watts
- permanent transfers for four 1st team players: Jules, Niskanen, Purrington, Alli
- loans of two players: Eisa, R Woods

(The period covered is the year to 1st Feb 2024)

I assume that the difference between "new registrations" and "permanent transfers" is that the latter were under contract at other clubs.

At least there was no agent fee for the loan of Admiral Muskwe!

Or is it that we paid a fee for the four 'permanent transfer' players?

I think that it turns out to be both. The players listed as 'new registrations' were all out of contract (Harper's signing announced shortly before 1st July, but presumably taking effect from the expiry of his Eastleigh contract). The players listed as 'permanent transfers' were under contract elsewhere and (IIRC) we had to pay a fee for each of them.

Do agents also get paid by their client's i.e the players.
The amount is negotiable between the Player and his representative - the FA recommend no more than 5% but that is purely a recommendation. Most Club's will also pay the Agent on behalf of the Player as a P11d benefit. There were new Agent regulations implemented on the 1st January which would have meant any player earning more than 200k pa would have to pay his agent directly rather than it being an allowed P11d benefit however this has been held up in litigation and is currently not being implemented until any and all legal challenges in other countries have been satisfied.

Of course a clear conflict of interest when the player's agent is paid by the buying club. IIRC there was one case (Pogba to Man Utd?) when the deal would only go through if the buying club paid the player's agent £20m (on top of the transfer fee)

Don't know the details of that one personally, but it wouldn't surprise me! Of course, there are some good Agents, but a lot of bad ones!

It wasn't too long ago that an Agent could actually represent all three parties within the same transaction under a Tripartite Agreement - buying club, Player and selling club, talk about conflict of interests - work that one out!

If anyone doubts the sheer venality and corruption throughout the "beautiful game" nowadays please take a little time to read this:
(I know it's the dreaded Guardian but still well worth a quick ponder)
Makes even old Al Capone and his mafia chums look even like pussycats in compassion.
These evil parasites are sucking the life of sport from deep within. 🤢

It's like a Monty Python sketch:

"Nice little football club you've go here, we wouldn't want something to happen to it, would we?"
