The perception at the moment rightly or wrongly is that players are being sold for big money but the replacements are nowhere near the same standard and so the knock on effect is the team suffers and the match day experience for our newer supporters is not an easy watch. Sustainability at City has to be on a number of levels and they all need to perform or you just tread water like we are at the moment. Selling players is our biggest income and that is what keeps us afloat. Initiatives are great and deserve support but there comes a point when you have to say this looks like deck chairs on the titanic. Namely it’s not working in its current format and a new approach is needed if you want to move up. You can’t sustain promotion and survival or better without considerable investment which we plainly do not have now or any time soon.The mission statement is “sustainable success” I believe. The context behind Project 6k is recognition that the club doesn’t generate sufficient revenue to survive long term in L1 based on current income streams.
Clearly we have generated additional income over the past 10 years through player sales. That money has been spent on capital infrastructure; improving the stadium, the pitch, supporter experience and the training ground, in addition to pumping up the playing budget to enable us to compete in and around the playoffs rather than the bottom half of L2.
We could have spent all that money on players, which may have resulted in promotion, but sooner or later that money will run out and we’d have been left with a falling down grandstand and shocking away end, rubbish pitch, poor training facilities and a lower average crowd with less income.
Project 6k merely sets the challenge of increasing revenue in a sustainable manner to achieve success on the pitch.

And that is the route we have taken to ensure our financial survival. But the cornerstone of this policy is the recruitment of a squad who can challenge, otherwise it can fall apart fast. We had a lucky escape under Tisdale when a return to the conference was a real possibility and only avoided after a late run of three or four wins. But even then the whole experience had a detrimental effect on our finances, especially the dire home form that saw home attendances wither away.And how big their crowds - and thus income - compared to ours? I suspect that even then if someone starts wafting seven digit cheques under their chairman’s nose their talented youngsters will be going the same way as ours.
Or perhaps we should have held on to Grimes, Watkins, Ampadu, Randall, Nicholls, Storey, Stockley, Wheeler and anyone else we made decent money from, I’m sure we’d be the Championship by now. Or playing in the D&E Premier as the reformed AFC Exeter after our inevitable bankruptcy.
Of course any replacements for outgoing players are not going to be the same quality as those leaving for clubs at a higher level. Randell Williams and Joel Randal will both be earning £5k+ per week in the Championship. How do you think this will happen boyo? Genuine questionIn the meantime we have Project 6k, which seems a very sensible plan to get the club to a sustainable position whereby we can establish ourselves in L1 without the need for windfall income (ie by selling players!).
It won’t with the current system.Catch 22 and all that.As soon as we bring on an exceptional player from the academy they are pinched ( sorry purchased ) by a club a bit further up the food chain , the money , received in instalments , is churned with only a small proportion going on the playing side. In addition this money is invested in poorer quality players who are quite often carrying injuries. So we lose a Randall and gain a Grounds. The academy has become the raison d'être which keeps us going but we’re never able to make that final push which betters us.Round and round and round ad infinitum. And sadly the gates won’t reach 6000 plus unless we start producing the goods. But then , it’s all been said before in countless ways.How do you think this will happen boyo? Genuine question
