A rare outing in goal for Mel Gwinnett(correct spelling I believe!) John Shaw had been signed by Colin Appleton pre season as the number 1 with Gwinnett as back up.
I think there was a clause in Shaw's contract that he would always play if fit.

Crowd under 2,000. The weather may have been a factor but looking at the season's programmes (thanks, Grecian Archive!) most of the home games had attendances around that figure. Mid-80s, the darkest time for football.
The nice little FA Cup run that season was a very welcome boost to revenue. Beating higher division Cardiff & Bristol City before a narrow 1-0 defeat at the reigning football league champions Everton.

Grim times indeed, both for football in general and for City.
Shame that many who complain so long and loud about the odd poor performance by the City these days weren't there to experience it. A bit of perspective is very useful!

Leading goal scorers.

Keith Bowker had a great start that season scoring a hatrick in the League Cup 1st Round at Hereford.

I was at the Liverpool match. Better than the most recent one.

A memorable day/evening.

I was knackered after watching the Ruts at Clones club in Plymouth the night before, getting back home to Dawlish Warren at 1am. I met work colleagues in the Windsor Hotel pub opposite the Station at 1030am before we got on the 2nd of the Football Specials that ran from ESD at 1200.
Got back after a few skirmishes in Liverpool about 4am. I was in work at 8am. 😴

City get a mention in today's Guardian. Joint record holders in England for "Most Home League Games in a single Month". (Not including cups, friendlies etc).

March 1969, seven home games. A bit too long ago for me, but some of our senior Exewebbers might remember? Round of applause for anyone who attended all seven.
