I would count people who are able to work but dont because, well, they dont need to because the government supplies everything for them. Beer, fags and sky sports.

Just get them back into work. Dont give them excuses to not work like mental health issues, child care, caring. You dont need a masters degree to work in the fields or sweep the streets.

Benefits should be earned.
Thanks for that original take 🙄

Get the idle back to work.
Now who needs to 'get real'?

It's our tax that pays for this, so what do we do with a 20 year old couple with a child. The fella can't find a job. They've not earned enough to receive some back?

Should benefits be greater for those who've paid more into the system and don't have 16k in savings at which point they get nothing?

Edited to add - no one under 40 is daft enough to pay for sky sports when there's fire sticks readily available (smiley winky thing)

Universal credit for unemployed people is £85 per week plus housing and council tax costs.

I'm sure that will keep the average person well supplied with beer, fags and Sky Sports subscriptions. As long as they don't bother to eat, buy clothes or take buses

During the height of the CoL crisis and poverty porn was dominating the telly news, it become a bit of a running joke in our house to see a procession of fat birds with the latest smart phones rock up at food banks regaling us with stories of how many meals they had to miss just to feed their kids.😀
The welfare lifestyle has become a choice for too many and I suspect was not what Beveridge had in mind back in the 1940’s when he created the much needed ‘safety net’ back then.

The countries with the best benefits systems, education and standards of living often have lower rates of economically inactive people.
Bingo.

People in those countries also believe paying tax is a patriotic duty, and have no desire to avoid it.

The 20 year old should be perfectly capable of finding a job. After all there is a million of them.

Whether he can find a job that pays a grand a week for 15 hours work, the job that he really wants, is open to debate.

If someone is willing to work in a job that is vacant then I have no issues with supporting him to a reasonable lifestyle.

There are far too many people who have no intention of working because of liberal governments handing them everything on a plate and making working for a living unviable.

And would you employ "idle" people with mental health issues?
Oh dear.

You swallow all that nonsense that all 9 million or so people of working age are sick ?

Prior to retirement, I was an employer and tried to get people back into work.

During the interview process, it was obvious those that only came for the interview because they had to have job interviews to retain benefits. They had no interest whatsoever in getting a job.

In spain, to gain a higher level ( still well below that of the uk ) you have to work for the local authority for 6 months out of 12. You would be expected to do work like street cleaning, gardening and clearing drains. All of which would be unacceptable to the economically inactive. Those unable or unwilling to do the work have their benefits cut by 100€ per week for the year.

Seems to work over here.
That sounds like a good plan.
