You're right. In Garry Nelson's second book Left Foot in the Grave where it documents a season as joint player/manager with Kevin Hodges at Torquay, they had advice from a more experienced manager (might have been Dave Smith, have to read it again) after some promising performances started to turn bad again. He said that lower league players tend to need repetitive drills and coaching refreshed regularly through the season as the coaching doesn't stick as much as it does to those players at a higher level.

The holy grail for all managers is for their players to show consistent good habits and understanding.
This is an excellent read. Also goes a long way to prove why Gerry f'ing Francis was crap for us.

My only wish is that we sign players who can very quickly learn from their mistakes so that they do not make the same ones, time and time again.

I became fairly disheartened that the managers comments after defeats during the latter part of the season were, "these are learning experiences and we've got to get better from them" (I paraphrase)

If, after say a dozen matches of next season, GC is coming out with the same, or similar comments, either we've signed the wrong players or our coaching isn't up to scratch on terms of developing players.
In fairness, a lot of those comments from GC came after we played those teams in the top 7. A lot of our younger players won't have played teams of the quality of Ipswich.

In MT's early days he said similar things time after time. After a while, the manager then has to realise that a player / a set of players aren't going to learn and replace them. MT did that successfully but it took him probably three teams to get there.

The current crop of players certainly did learn a lot last season. They have shown they can adapt to the style GC wants them to play. The next step is to cut out the silly mistakes and punish teams better when we're on top. If these players and the summer additions can't do that then I have no doubt GC will move players on. If, after another cycle of players, the same thing is happening then of course you need to look at the coaches.

Of course, the difference between MT and GC is that we're in a higher league so whereas MT's had an achievable target of a top 7 finish in LeagueTwo, to achieve a top 6 finish in League One will be much harder. We're likely to lose more games so we're more likely to hear GC talk about learning when we're playing the likes of Derby.

It will take another season for GC to have his squad
Players like Caprice and Coley surly would not be here if they were not given silly contracts by MT

CB Taylor Moore (not Moore-Taylor) released by Bristol City. Was on loan at Shrewsbury last season. Would be a really tidy signing…Shrewsbury have offered him a contract and reported interest from other L1 clubs. Wonder if he’d fancy a move down the M5.
