Agreed, but you do have to spread the risk and generate maximum value from the money. By spending £200k on a transfer fee and then £4k / week for three years, the total cost is over £800k. Alternatively we could spend the same money of two free transfers but give them £2,600 per week (£135,000 per year). The former is clearly a greater risk in case of injury, loss of form, inability to settle, whatever. That's an overly simplistic example, but the point remains.

The other point about marquee signings is that it can create squad divisions. When your "lesser" players (the first year pro's etc) are on a few hundred quid a week and they are essentially doing the same job as matey boy on £4k, £5k, £6k / week, then that is unlikely go down well. You also cannot use financial restraints to turn down requests for pay rises in new contracts etc. The knock on effect of paying one player significantly more than others could be damaging.

Yes, a new "mega bucks" (by our standards) signing would great, but it has ramifications, and arguably is not the best use of budgets.
I would love to know who we tried to sign in January before settling for Donovan Wilson as a last-minute fallback option, how close we were to signing them and what the stumbling block was.

Seymour, Sparkes etc will only be given their chance when they are good enough, we have to trust the manager on this...if they are not ready they won’t play...the club has a fantastic record with this policy over the last decade or so.
With so many youngsters knocking on the door of the first team Matt Taylor is going to have some tricky judgement calls about how good they are. There's no point trying to rely on them too much if they are not quite ready but equally there's no point in signing expensive experienced players if, like Aaron Martin and Jordan Tillson, they are going to end being kept out of the team by younger players.

To be fair to Matt, it wasn't him who signed Tillson on a three year contract before throwing his toys out of the pram and leaving !

Sometimes it's a false economy to sign someone who is injury prone or not proven. You still have to pay that player's salary. Better to get someone who is a proven goalscorer and pay extra.
If you have a proven goalscorer it's a big help, of course. Surely we have enough money in the bank to sign just one player for a couple of hundred k.
One player in this league who is proven quality who I think is worth pushing the boat out for would be Sammy Szmodics from Colchester

Rumours are that he's off to Bristol City. They're flush at the mo after the Lloyd Kelly transfer so can offer big £££

Didn't Mo Eisa go to Bristol City from Cheltenham last close season? Let's hope for his sake Szmodics makes more of an impression after making the jump.

The E&E article said he had until the middle of the month to make his mind up that must be nearly up now.

I wouldn't say they were exactly flush - just slightly less insanely in debt. Steve Lansdown has apparently now 'invested' somewhere close to 150 million quid in the club in pursuit of the Premieship pot of gold.
