Progress for Mercedes’ this weekend in Spain but 6/10 off of Charles Leclerc’s pole time, George Russell optimistic that he can challenge the Ferrari’s for a place on the podium though

That was a stunning lap by Leclerc to be fair. The Mercs have certainly taken a step forward and look to have sorted the porpoising. That should help their race pace although the RB's still look the quickest in that respect. With tyre deg high this weekend that always brings Checo into play.

It's interesting that George is having the better over Lewis at the moment. Might be a bit down to Lewis getting used to driving a difficult car for the first time in years whilst it is still probably a better car than George has been used to. Add that to George being better than some have thought and showing that he will be right up there challenging given the car.

Sky seemed quite surprised that Leclerc managed to pull that lap out...I only managed to catch Q3 what happened to Lando?

Lando was 11th in Q2 going into his last lap and improved to 8th which pushed Mick Schumacher to 11th but then had his lap deleted for track limits at turn 12. It was very marginal and probably didn't add any time to the lap but the right call and at least consistent as Yuki Tsunoda had the same thing happen in Q1.

Lap 2
Lewis: We should save the engine.
Bono: We can come 8th.

Lap 61
Lewis 4th.

Unlucky for Leclerc today, he had the race in the bag.

Verstappen’s DRS not opening properly made for some good racing between him and George Russell…very unlucky on Charles Leclerc having to retire from the lead after a sudden loss of power.

I was actually even more impressed that George managed to keep Checo behind him for quite a while with a fully functioning DRS before he was told to hop it out of the way for Max. That RB is a bullet in a straight line but George put himself in the right places whilst just staying on the right side of the rules.

It was inevitable that Checo was told to get out of the way twice because of "different strategies" for Max but when Checo was the quicker and Max was in the way he was told to stay put. It shows how Max orientated the team is and how much they fear Charles to be doing that this early in the season.

I think Max thanked Perez twice over the team radio at the end of the race, which showed he thought he was a little fortunate to win that one…Pole should be critical in Monte Carlo next weekend.

Sublime lap hooked up by Charles Leclerc to take pole for the Azerbaijan GP tomorrow….George Russell once again getting the upper hand over Lewis Hamilton 2/10 and two places higher up the grid in 5th.
