When a player's agent is looking to engineer a move for his player to a certain club, the newspapers the following day have the back page headline: "Player issues 'come and get me' plea".
Another one from players/agents about moves -more a catchphrase than a cliche

'ambition' used as a code for 'more money for me'

('this club is really ambitious/not ambitious enough')

Adding the word "literally" to just about all the clichés mentioned here, nearly all the time wrongly.

"this player has literally only one foot", etc, etc.
Literally following on from this comment is the cliche

"He's all left foot"

In that case, why is he not the freak show at the Circus???

Oh and triple question marks and exclamation marks really grind my gears!!!

Another one from 'arry.

"He deserves all the credit in the world."

In these tough economic times I think this approach may be a little liberal!

"They're drinking in the last chance saloon".

Wonder if it get used for City in the next 6 days?

Maybe not a football cliche but why, in marathons, do the participants continually pause to, "take liquids on board," when it's clear they're having a drink?

Having said that, after winning on Saturday I plan to take an awful lot of "liquid on board"!

I was thinking about raising that one too. But let's split hairs: I would class this is a platitude rather than a cliché. "He's capable of that." Yes, he's just done it. Thanks for stating the bleeding obvious, Leroy.

I have decided I don't like the cliche "It's a game of two halves" given the chance of drinking during a game I would get through loads more than 2 halves, most likely 4 or 5 pints.

'Closed the gap to 3 points'- no, 'narrowed' the gap. its closed only when there is no gap.

'Denied by the woodwork'- as if the post or bar has moved into the way of an otherwise goalbound shot.

'They have really taken control in this second half'- what other second half are we interested in?

'He can do a job for me'- such as play football perhaps?
