Sad news as he was only 78.

I saw him as more of a medium pacer than spinner who was deadly on damp sticky English tracks. I will forever recall him getting the final Strine wickets to square the Ashes series in 1968.

Yes the famous photograph of that last wicket with all the fielders clustered around the batsman .
Derek Underwood was my favourite cricketer only a couple of years older than me but a sporting hero nonetheless .

"Only 78" ?!?!? Err.....

Probably the best English Spinner ever to play Test Cricket.
His first class bowling average in a career that spanned 24 years was just over 20.

Not a good week for former cricketers :(

Raman Subba Row had retired young and before I got into cricket but I note he had both an excellent first class and Test batting average

RIP

When the day is done and the ball has spun in the umpires pocket away
And all remains in the groundsman's pains for the rest of time and a day
There'll be one mad dog and his master pushing for four with the spin
On a dusty pitch with two pounds six of willow wood in the sun
When an old cricketer leaves the crease you never know whether he's gone
If sometimes you're catching a fleeting glimpse of a twelfth man at silly Mid-on
And it could be Geoff and it could be John
With a new ball sting in his tail and it could be me and it could be thee
And it could be the sting in the ale ....
