The difference with rugby is the aim is to get over the oppositions goal line so any advance up the field is an advantage. The difference in football between a free kick, say, 50 yards out and 40 is negligible and only in certain positions would it benefit much. Also, would a free kick 27 yards out become a penalty?... our egg chasing chums have this far more effectively sorted with the punishment of moving the kick ten yards further forward (just as rugby seems to get by without the routine chasing of referees)
