Wycombe Wanderers did indeed play at SJP before 2000 - on 1 May 1967. Could that have been it? The only thing is that it was against St Luke’s College as part of their centenary season. City fan and history collector Steve Stentiford contacted me to suggest this game. Here’s the programme cover:

Martin, that’s the game we went to,and our student did play left back for St Luke’s,it was an unusual match, but that’s definitely the game, can you pass on my gratitude to Steve stentiford, who has helped restore my sanity !

looks like dontpassback wasn't wrong after all (once he identified it was St Lukes playing at SJP)
Thanks Andrew,it was a long time ago and I am very grateful to Martin and Steve for taking the time to do the research and add some much needed clarity

A few links back in the day. Iirc at one stage we had two of their players signed up to play for us, a forward Alan Pinkney and the other whose name escapes me, I believe was a keeper. And wasn't the Cat n Fiddle their home ground until Clifford Hill bought it after St Lukes became part of Exeter University ?

I could well have been at that game. Used to go to watch St Lukes at SJP quite often, we had a student teacher that played for them. Invaded the pitch in an ironic way when he scored on one occasion. Got hell at school the next day!
Think I might have been there as well, any chance to show the team sheet Martin?

Pinkney went on to play a few for City the next year I think.

Exactly. Someone posts “I remember a game once” and not much else, and a few posts later we’re all reading a photocopy of the programme from the game.

Amazing work - Martin Weiler take a bow, son (copyright: Kirky).

Think Pinkney, although still a student, was in the team that played Man U in 68.
