Sorry but with players like Carroll who let's face it was average at best, you offer him a deal with a deadline and then say take it leave it.

You don't let players like that dictate to you.
How do you know we haven’t done that?

Dragging on. End of season was long enough ago. "Hi Tom, you have until 31st May to sign or do one". Job done.

And? How do you know a deadline wasn’t set but we haven’t yet reached that date?

Made 38 appearances for us last year.Caldwell wouldn't have picked him so many times if he thought he wasn't doing what was asked of him and was only average.Only Caldwell's opinion counts when the team is picked.

True enough, but personally I'm not sure he was one of our most effective players and should he necessarily be first choice next season? We are currently a bit light at CM so probably he will if he signs, and most managers tend to want at least one older player - witness Tisadale persisting with Oakley and Wycombe with Bloomfield.

But surely it depends of who else joins and maybe also whether Caldwell wants to have more flexibility about having a rigid back 3 or make space for someone to play in front of the defence. It was interesting that he talked about McMillan as a DM as well as a CB /RB.

In contrast, we were a different team after Ryan Woods came in on loan, now if Hull let him go I'd take him back like a shot.

"In August 2023, manager Liam Rosenior announced that Woods would not be in his plans for the upcoming season and that he was free to depart the club"
I wonder if the new boss, Tim Walter, thinks the same?

Free to depart the club ≠ with his contract paid up, id imagine. He's not going to want to half his pay, so that's the sticking point for any club who wants to sign him. Pay championship wages or work some compromise out with Hull

If a better player was willing to sign right now then GC wouldn’t hesitate to do so.

If GC thinks that Carroll is the best we can get then giving him time is sensible.

If the player wanted to re-sign surely he would have done so b4 pre season training started?

As he hasn’t to date one would have to assume he’s looking for a better/more convenient opportunity elsewhere.
